pondering

It seems silly to still be talking about Christmas this far past the actual holiday but seeing as I believe the spirit of Christmas is something that should be shared year round, I'm not late at all, just getting ready for next year...

Regardless, I did receive the most perfect of gifts this year from my husband and son.  I found a tin of wooden spools of thread in my "teacher closet" that I finally cleaned out this fall.  Not knowing what to do with all of that beautiful thread, it remained in those tins the past few months.  The tins made their way into the house, out into the garage again, back in next to my sewing machine, and around and around.  I loved to just open the tin to look at the threads, to imagine women of another generation using that thread to create goodness for their own family.  A time in which things happened a lot slower and objects were valued for their craftsmanship.  A time in which something as insignificant as a spool on which to hold thread was made out of wood.  Carved out of a tree.  And wrapped around it was a rainbow of cotton.  Used to create magic from cotton and needle.

And then, on Christmas morning, Jed and Nate disappeared into the garage and told me to close my eyes.  When I opened them this amazing-ness greeted me!  It now has a home on the shelf above my sewing table and I get to gaze at it in wonder every meal from our dining room table.  Truly the perfect gift.  So thankful.
